Backdrops are used by pros, serious photographers and videographers for portraiture, weddings, interviews and product photography. Backdrops eliminate distractions, allowing viewers to concentrate on the subject.
Background materials include seamless paper, cotton muslin, canvas cloth, Chroma Key blue or green screens, washable vinyl, and flocked or reflective fabric for small product photography. Digital collections of stock background photos are available on CDs; two images can be easily combined when a subject is photographed in front of a Chromakey blue screen or green screen.
Seamless Paper: Best known manufacturers are Superior Specialties and Savage Universal Corporation. Sold on rolls as wide as 140" (nearly 12 feet.) Dozens of colors. Fragile, easily wrinkled, torn, dirtied and scuffed. Requires background support stands or ceiling support. Wide rolls of seamless paper are not portable.
Cotton Muslin and Canvas backdrops: Available in color-fast solid colors, mottled prints, crushed earth tones and hand-painted portrait backgrounds. Muslins are available in different weights, are generally washable (with some fading and shrinkage) and can be folded for transport. Muslin cloth wrinkles with washing and folding; some photographers like the background texture created by wrinkling. Canvas backgrounds are heavier in weight, have a longer life and are generally transported in rolls, making them less portable.
Other considerations for buying cloth backgrounds: is the backdrop hemmed on four sides to prevent fabric tears, is there a sewn pocket for your support rod, are metal grommets embedded for hanging heavier canvas fabric?
Chroma Key Green and Blue: Special fabrics, vinyls and background paints. Green screens are most often used for digital photography, blue screens are generally used for videography. Photographing or recording a subject against a solid green/blue backdrop allows a photographer to replace the background with any stock image.
