copyrighting photos and docs

What is involved in copyrighting a photograph? Do I just need to put an official looking copyright stamp on the back and also on the slide itself?

I have been researching my father's military career for 6 years after a 28 year separation. I have spent thousands of dollars at Kinko's making color copy enlargements of the hundreds of photos he gave me along with all kinds of interesting documents regarding some highly classified operations he was involved in.
I have also scanned them at hi-res and want to figure out the best way to maybe, in the future, create a web site.

After finding a waiver that Texas Tech sent me to sign if I donated photos or copies, I began to realize that I needed to get the legal end of all my efforts into perspective just in case a book may come out of it or if for no other reason, to donate to his various army units and museums.

My question is, can you point me in that direction? I'm no web guru or author, but willing to forgo some yard, house and even fun projects to complete this monster of a project I started.

Thanks very much.
