: : I just purchased a Nikon N65 with a Nikor 28-80 1:3.5-5.6D lens. My question is if I set the camera on auto, what position does the aperture ring have to be? Someone told me F22. Is this right? Or will the camera move the aperture setting automatically. Any advice will be deeply appreciated.
: Hi Sandy.
: I don't have direct experience with the N65, but I do know MOST cameras don't have to be set to a certain F/stop to use in automatic.

Hello! With Nikon SLRs on autoexposure with the Aperature Mode selected, you _must_ have the aperature set to the maximum _number_ (i.e. f22, f32, or f16).
This allows the camera body to close the diaphragm down to the setting it desires when you press the shutter button to take the picture.
Let's try an example if the lens wasn't set at the minimum opening. If the lens was set at anything else, say at f5.6, and the camera body wanted to close the diaphragm down to f11, the lens would stop the diaphagm at f5.6, and your photo would be overexposed! Playing with the diaphragm pin on the back of the lens with the lens set at different aperature settings will let you see what the camera body does to close the diaphragm down when exposing the film!
