Minolta X-9. Anyone familiar with it?

I was given a like new Minolta X-9 today.
I can't cock the shutter and the shutter will not release. I know the batteries are dead.
Is it possible it's already cocked and it won't fire because the batteries are dead?
If so, that would explain why it also won't let me cock it.
