I'm aware of the switch. When I turn the
meter on the needle shoots straight up and
stays there, except when I rotate the shutter
dial setting off the 1->1000 range.

I'll take the top off and see if any of the
connections look iffy. If not, then I guess
the problem is in the the little circuit board
that extends off the VF to the left.

: you do know that the meter has a switch and isn't always on as on some cameras.
: The switch is the black plastic piece on the side of the lens mount near the flash cord plug and must be turned on after each exposure.
