A screw-in closeup lens will get you closer, but you'll get sharper images with a macro lens. of course, it will cost more too, so the decision depends on your needs. your zoom lens may also be responsible for some of the dullness in your photos, as these tend to have lower contrast than fixed-focal-length lenses and possibly poorer sharpness as well, especially at close distances.
