Lens mounting onto Minolta af body

I have a Minolta (AF) Maxxum530si and I have a vivtar 120-600mm lens that has stamped on the bayonet end M/MD,
my question, why won't they mount together? Do I need a converter or what? I contacted minolta and are camera stores but they were of no help. Please help,
I have a ten day trial to test out the lens before returing it.
