The meter of the AE-1 is no slouch. It is meant to be used in the Automatic mode
and is accurate I would say 95% of the time.
If for some reason you would like to change the exposure , for example in a
back light situation you can use the AE-1 automatic back light compensation button.
As you are holding the camera there are two buttons on the left side of the lens
mount. One of them , I forget which one will open the lens approx 1 1/2 stops
over what the meter is calling for. You can see which one it is by looking through
the finder and observing the needle
