i'm not sure about the lens on/lens off thing, but i can tell you that a flash will be of no uise whatever at an evening baseball game, as it will only reach a very limited distance from the camera. what you need for that is faster film (you didn't mention what you've been using, but you'll want at least iso400 for evening shots) and a faster lens. most zoom lenses are pretty slow (meaning they require a lot of light). the cheapest low-light lens you can get would be the normal 50mm f/1.7 or f/1.8. this will do most of what your 35-80 can do, and it will need much less light to do it.
