I take photos for objects that I sell on eBay. I set the item on a plain white surface with a matching white background. I use a couple cheap slave strobes that I bought at B&H Photo, that I set off using a bounce flash (bounced from ceiling) on my digital camera (works the same with film too). You can experiment using the lights at different angles. I have mine set slightly to the front and at each side of the object. Works great for me.
