Hi, I have an old Canon AE-1 black body camera with a FD 50mm F1.4 SSC lens I received as a gift in 1979. It is in excellent condition since I almost never used it. The reason? I also received a Sears/Ricoh manual TLS camera at the same time along with a 90-230mm zoom lens, as well as the standard 50mm F1.8 lens that came with it. I used the Sears camera almost exclusively (with excellent results) because of the versatile zoom lens. About 10 years ago I began oil painting and have progressed to the point where I want to photograph my subjects (people, landscapes, nature, etc.) as a reference for my paintings. My question is, should I sell my Canon outfit and buy some less expensive used m42 screwmount lenses (i.e. Takumars, etc.) for the Sears camera or should I sell the Sears camera and buy a used Canon FD lens (better quality?) which costs more? Another option would be to sell everything and use the money to buy a used A-1 or other camera with more versatility lens-wise and/or "control-wise" as in composition, exposure, etc. Also, have there ever been any Vivitar lenses made that are actually worth buying? Any good suggestions will be greatly appreciated and considered. Thank you.
