Don't be embarrassed! I've been asked that question many times over the years ! ;-)
It'a true that the hack saw is the only way HOWEVER you can get auxiliary lens that screw on the front and can make the existing lens either wider or more telephoto. These are very cheap to buy if you can still find some around. Try eBay.
