SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. This means that there is only one lens which serves both as the viewfinder and the camera lens, and that viewing is done through reflection (ie, the mirror that flips up out of the way when the shutter fires).
there are not very many new SLRs available any more under $300, so you have a choice between the very cheapest of the autofocus models with all-plastic bodies, or a more rugged metal-bodied manual focus model such as the nikon fm10 or the minolta x370 (i think those are both still available new). you might want to think about what your future plans are (nikon vs minolta, manual vs autofocus) and choose the one that will allow you to keep your investment in lenses.
