Even back 30 years ago when I shot a lot of B/W film (bought in bulk rolls), I processed my own photos. It's not nearly as costly to set up a B/W darkroom compared to color. I shoot color now. If I want B/W prints, I now do it digitally using Adobe Photoshop. With my PC I can scan the negative, unsaturate the colors, adjust the brightness & contrast, and print it out (selecting "black" on printer software) on my printer. If you print B/W photos, always select "black" on your printer software, or your print may look sepia toned.
