: Accidentally deleted photos from digital camera. Can they be retrieved?
Editor's Note: I am reposting the following answer to the reader's question, which first appearing here on September 20, 2001
Good Day All,
I've received three complaints of sudden loss of digital images in digital camera's this week. Two were using SmartMedia cards and one was using a Compact Flash card. If this happens to you, use the information below to test your camera and recover the lost files from the memory card.
First Some Troubleshooting: Did you hit the Delete All function in the camera's menu? Was the camera subjected to any external electrical field, X-Ray scan, put close to a cell phone, or a 2-way radio of some kind (these are highly unlikely causes)?
Now Some Tests: First immediately remove and Do Not Use the current card. Replace the card with a new card or a known good card. Take a bunch of images and test it's operation. It's possible that a current surge from the camera's flash circuit could potentially damage the Compact Flash card or the card could have malfunctioned.
Now Save The Images. If the Compact Flash card is placed in a card reader attached to a computer then standard file recovery tools can be used to recover the files. Programs such as Norton Utilites and WinHex will work for you. The important thing is to make sure you stop using the card immediately so the files are not overwritten by the camera and most certainly do not reformat the card as that will erase all current data.
I found this information on Philip Greenspun's site, For details on how to recover images from corrupt compact flash cards, go to:
