Minolta Dimage 7 wide angle problem

I recently bought a Minolta Dimage 7 digital camera package that included the 2x telephoto converter and a .48x wide angle converter. The telephoto is fine, but if I try to use the wide angle with the camera's lens set any wider than about 50mm, I get a black "frame" around the image. I can fix this by zooming the camera's lens in past 50mm, but to me this is like driving my car with the parking brake on. I asked a rep from the company that sold me the camera and he recommended that I "zoom the camera all the way in" before trying to use the wide angle. Is the wide angle lens I got just junk,or is this supposed to happen? If this is how it's going to be, than the "wide angle adapter won't give any wider view than about what the camera will do without it. Was I "taken", or is this an inevitable consequence of Minolta's design?
