If the lens is made for your camera it should work. My Maxxums all will work with 3rd party lenses, as should yours. However there are some earlier A/F lenses out there that will work only on the non-"I" series cameras, such as the Maxxums 5000, 7000, and 9000. I have run into some Sigma lenses that would only work on the original Maxxums. I'm kinda surprised that the 28-300 wouldn't work, because I was thinking it was introduced after Minolta came out with the "I" series (which includes the 5, 7, and 9). It's quite possible the lens is at fault if your camera works okay with your Minolta lens. I suggest you go to a camera shop and try a different 3rd party lens, and see if it works okay. Also check the contacts on the lens mount (5 little brass lugs), and make sure they are clean. Also, when you put the lens on, make sure the camera is in the off (lock) position, and the switch is set to A/F on the left side (facing away) of the lens mount. I think you'll find that the Sigma lens is probably defective.
