I am using the Saunders LPL C7700MX multi system enlarger and want to use RC Grade 3 paper. Can you tell me what settings I should use? Also can you advise what settings I should use when using multigrade RC paper? Many thanks. Silvia O'Toole

Hello Silvia,

I assume you are inquiring about the correct settings for the dichroic filters in the enlarger head for different contrast grades using variable contrast paper. Unfortunately there is not an easy answer because the dichroic filter settings differ with each enlarger manufacturer, and the last time I looked the filter settings for Kodak Polycontrast paper were different from the settings recommended by Ilford for Multigrade paper.

Ilford has a pdf file for their Multigrade papers which offers tables for correct dichroic filters for different enlargers. According to Ilford, LPL enlargers use Kodak values. See page 4 of Technical Information for Multigrade Paper.

Download and save this pdf file. I recommend printing it out for future reference.

Be aware both Ilford and Kodak recommend the use of their gelatin filters for contrast change with variable contrast filters for best results, and my experience in the darkroom indicates they are valid reasons for this.

The best place to continue your query would be the Australian distributor of LPL enlargers. I tried very hard to search for this and came up empty handed.

The manufacturer is based in Japan. The address is LPL Co. Ltd.
