I have been asked to redo some photos for a catalogue and they have told me that I need 300 dpi, that my camera needs to take the photos at 300dpi, and that I probably need to get a new camera that is capable of doing 1200dpi. My question is.....How do I know what DPI my camera is at. When I pull it into Photoshop it's at 72 res. Where or what do I have to do to change this or figure out what my camera is capable of?

Editor's Note: all consumer digital cameras take images at 72 dpi. It's the file size which is paramount for printing. How big is the print going to be in the catalog? A 300 dpi print 4x4 inches would need a file which is 1200 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high, preferably a tif file, or a jpeg taken at highest quality.

I need to know that if I take a picture, bring it into Photoshop, check the size, see that it's at a res of 72.......If I change that to 300, does it work? Is it actually at 300 or will it be all pixely or whatever? Sorry don't know all the technical lingo! I will be saving these pics to a CD and sending them off for a catalogue, and before I waste my time redoing them I need to know if this will work for them. All I have been told is.... 300dpi-4x5. This is what he needs....can I do this?

To produce a 4x5 image with 300dpi resolution you need to set your camera to a resolution of at least 1200x1500 pixels. if the image is smaller in resolution, photoshop can't increase it.

need more info about your digital camera

You are not providing enough information. What digital camera are you shooting these digital images with? What is the maximum file size the camera is capable of, i.e. the height and width of the image in pixels? Did you shoot the catalog images at the highest resolution setting, i.e. height and width of image? If your digital camera offers several levels of jpeg compression, did you shoot the images at the fine setting (i.e. least compression.) Does the digital camera only output jpegs or can you shoot tifs (Tif files are MUCH better for print usage because there is no compression.)?

Preparing image files for print publication requires some knowledge and training. It's not as simple as putting an image up on the internet.
