Anytime you are buying used equipment there is some luck involved since you are not dealing with someone you really know.
As for cameras like the Minolta SRT series vs. the Praktica MTL 5b for example. I have used both. If you can get a properly working Praktica, you will get a great value in photography and will be able to afford a couple of DDR Zeiss lenses in addition, compared to what you pay for the SRT body.
But then you really don't have any warranty on how long it will work--which is the downside in purchasing older cameras.
