I find the thought of a "do it yourself" repair on the AE-1 very distressing! I've done this repair of the mirror cage damper many times over the years and I would consider the possibility that a user could successfully complete this repair very very low. I would NOT advise any user taking the top off the AE-1. PLEASE put away your screwdrivers! The odds are you will ruin a good AE-1.
I also would not recommend trying to 'lubricate' the damper mechanism from the top. To do this you could not clean it first and would have to use excessive oil and this is not good on the camera. The proper and IMHO only way to do this repair is to remove the mirror cage. When the damper is removed and sitting in front of you, it can be properly cleaned and then lubricated using less than a drop of oil.
The AE-1 is a complex camera requiring more than minor skills to properly service.
