I don't think you find anything in the handbook because this is not supposed to happen.
The Vivitar Series 1 450PZ is a 35mm compact point and shoot camera with a 38-70mm zoom. It appears to be a discontinued model and was last selling for $59 on at least one web site when it was available - (see http://www.theeconozone.com/econozone/vivser1zoomc.html )
If this camera is no longer under warranty, it would cost more to repair than it is worth.
Call Vivitar customer service and see if they have any suggestions (805)498-7008 from 7:45am to 4:30pm PST.
