: I have a CoolPix 990, using a Wide Angle lens. I need a flash for inside work and the users manual says the internal and external flash are disabled when using this lens. Are there any other options?

How much manual control do you have with the Coolpix 900 in terms of shutter speed and aperture control?

All I can think of is putting the camera on a tripod, setting a small aperture and selecting a couple of seconds exposure time, then triggering the shutter and manually firing a flash such as the Vivitar 283 with the optional plastic wide angle lens attachment. Of course, this won't work in the day time or when the ambient light is sufficient to record a picture on its own.

Now if the Nikon design engineers had just left well enough alone and not restricted the use of the flash....

There's a Flash FAQ for the 990: Nikon Coolpix 950/990/995 External Flash FAQ http://www.panix.com/~donwiss/flashfaq.html (see hyperlink below)
