Most major manufacturers like Canon, Minolta, Pentax, and Nikon make great quality compact-zoom cameras. The only problem you may incounter is lens speed. The lenses on these cameras may be to slow for indoor sporting events, and their flash range will be less than 15'. You will have to compromise by using extremely fast film such as ISO-800. You might be better off getting an auto-focus SLR and using a faster zoom lens. With an SLR you may also use a flash with much greater range. As far as the best brand... A Canon user will say Canon is the best, and a Minolta user will swear by Minolta cameras and so on.
