The Audio cannot be at the gate because the motion at the gate is intermitent and the sound has to have a continous run. I believe the Super 8 standard for sound is the sound precedes the picture by 48 frames. It's been a long time since I was involved with it so I may be off a few frames.
If the sound is `out of synch' the film may have too much or too little slack as it travels through.
Have you tried the film in question in another sound projector? Have you tried a commercial film in your projector?
