The main difference is that the AE-1P has an additional 'programmed mode' which selects BOTH shutter speed and aperture depending on a certain program stored in the camera. In this mode, you cannot preset either aperture or speed. Otherwise it is very similar to the AE-1 which has automatic aperture mode only (with manually preset shutter speed).
