I have found a solution !
My local camera store stocks a multi fit reel for super/standard/single 8 by Gepe (£2.99/c$4.50 each - Gepe ref 5202). These come suited for super 8 but have a selection of inserts for the centre from which you select the one appropriate for your projector. And what do you know.... one of them is for 8mm dia spindles !
As for the manufacturer. I think Doug Clifford is right. On the rear of the bulb vent casting is moulded the name "New One Electronics Corp" which could be US or Japanese I guess. Anyway, i am now up and running.
