: Hi I have a Minolta Maxxum - 330si (with a AF Zoom 28-80 lens and a Sigma Zoom 100-300mm). It takes great pictures.

: Was wondering if any one hand recommendations on a digital camera that will produce a similar quality picture. And advice on a printer would be great too.

Are you buying a digital camera primarily to make prints? If so, the megapixel rating is very important. 2-3 megapixel cameras can produce photo quality prints up to 4x6 and 5x7. You'll need three or more megapixels for a decent 8x10.

When I bought my first digital camera last year, my minimum requirements were

(1)a digital camera with the ability to capture both tifs and jpegs - I shoot all images as .tif files because the images are uncompressed and retain the greatest information. I like to manipulate and correct the image afterwards and don't want to work with jpegs which have already had some picture information removed.
(2)a digital camera with an external flash shoe so that I could attach an off-camera flash.
(3)a camera with a lens capable of accepting close-up filters and accessory lenses.
(4)the ability to manually control the aperture and shutter speed.

I bought a Fujifilm MX-2900 zoom and have been happy with the results.

I would suggest looking at digital cameras from Nikon, Olympus and Fujifilm. Other candidates include Sony and Canon.

There are several great web sites to research digital cameras

1. Digital Camera Resource Page - http://www.dcresource.com/

2. Digital Photography Review - http://www.dpreview.com/

3. The Imaging Resource - http://www.imaging-resource.com/

4. PC Photo Review - http://www.pcphotoreview.com/

5. Steve's Digicams - http://www.steves-digicams.com/

The best resource for basic digital camera knowledge is Dennis Curtin's web site. http://www.shortcourses.com/

As for photo quality color printers, I just bought an Hewlett Packard 990 and I'm happy with it. What I like about HP printers is the print head is built-in to the inkjet cartridge, so when you replace the cartridge you are getting a brand new print head. More than a few people think that Epson produces the best color printers, but since the Epson print head is built-in to the printer, there are clogging problems and the ongoing need to clean the print head.
