Model photography using black background

Question: I want to know the technique to use to get model photos (human) where the model is lit somewhat (say in a gentle light) but the background and floor is totally black, so it looks like the model is just lying in space.

I'm referring to pictures such as the one in the link (Rikkes Voss Photography)
