I tried another cassette, one I had recorded previously and knew to be good, and got the same result....I also tried reconnecting the whole thing to the VCR, without success...
The recording I made on the HI-8 cassette which I was attempting to transfer to the VHS tape is time sensitive....I need to get it transferred over in the next day or so....I wonder if one of the companies in the business of transferring 8mm films, slides, etc. to video would have the necessary equipment to make this transfer. Perhaps I can contact them..
Also, a local camera shop rents slide projectors, etc. to customers...I guess I could them a call to see if they have any HI-8 format cameras to rent (I don't mean to sound naive, but are HI-8 cameras still being produced? Ours has been serving us so well that I've been "out of circulation" regarding the latest video camera technology)..
