: I need to use an old Nikon 4004s and found that a battery had leaked in the battery compartment. What is the best way to clean it up? I've scraped off the residue, and tried a pencil eraser, but it doesn't work well. Help!

If you mean that there's still some residue on the sides of the compartment, you might try a small round brush, shaped like a bottle brush, to clean the area. Then, shake loose the dust, and using a BARELY damp cotton tipped swab or wad of cotton or paper towel wipe the inside of the battery compartment. Use a COOL blowing hair dryer to eliminate all moisture from the compartment.
If you are saying that the electrical charge coming from the compartment is poor or inconsistent, the terminals might be dirty or corroded beyond repair. Dbl check to see if they still need to be cleaned.
Good luck!
George
