I am looking for a relatively inexpensive film scanner to buy for a beginner photographer. I am in Houston, and the shops here are both hard to find, and once found, don't know much about film scanners (by this I mean negative sccanners). Can anyone give me any tips? I would like to know what is the price range (including for second hand machines), and what is the best on the market at the moment.

Editor's Note: Take a look at the Primefilm 1800U bundled with Silverfast Lite scanning software. Manufactured by Pacific Image Electronics. Sells for about $250. Make sure you buy the unit with the Silverfast software if you plan to scan color negatives. The earlier version was bundled with Pacific Image's own proprietary software which worked fine with color slides and black and white negatives, but doesn't work so well with color negatives. Look for the Primefilm scanner at your local CompUSA store or online.
