Sounds like the focusing motor has about had it. It can be replaced, but will cost more than your camera body is worth. You could replace the 3000i with a newer 300si or 400si body for under 100 bucks on eBay. Also try http://www.keh.com . They have several nice used Maxxums for under $150. Like a Maxxum rz530si for $149 in "like new-minus" condition. It will probably cost more than $100 to repair your Maxxum 3000i, and the 400si and 530si have more fearures with the option of manual exposure.

First of all, how old is the camera? If the camera isn't very old the situation could be as suggested before (unclean lens). Check not only the outside lens, but also the inside of the lens as well as the mirror where the sensors are. Be very careful on all areas. Only use recommeded cleaning cloths on your lenses. If your trying to focus on moving subject, that is next to impossible (better to use manual focus).
And sometimes the camera is unsure of what you want to focus on, like on a human subject. Again when this happens change it to manual focus.
Auto focus to me, was basically designed to get more of an area photo. I believe you are becoming more professional in your photo taking, and the autofocus is unable to keep up with your demands. If this is the case, switch to manual and have fun.
