: What is the best lens for portraits to use with the Canon T-70?
: Thanks!
The answer to this question applies to all 35mm cameras, not just the Canon T-70. Most photographers use a short telephoto lens for the most pleasing portrait shots. Canon made an 85mm f/1.8 which is ideal for this purpose. It's the default lens on my Canon F1. Why a short telephoto lens? It's the characteristics. A telephoto lens compresses the distance between objects - in the case of photo portraits, it optically flattens the sharp features on your subject's face - it reduces the apparent size of large noses and sharp chins. A short telephoto lens lets you take a headshot without breathing on the subject or intruding on their personal space. Because telephoto lenses have reduced depth-of-field, they throw the background pleasingly out of focus, forcing the viewer's attention on the subject. You can, of course, use a telephoto zoom set to around 85mm to accomplish much the same results, but I'll take my single focal length 85mm lens anyday. Some photographers work with a focal length up to 105mm.
