I think APS was introduced to try to make handling film in point & shot cameras foolproof. Many photographers look down on the APS system, because the negatives are smaller. Some say the film is inferior. There is some thought that we'll all be using digital cameras someday. But I would bet that APS will go the way of 126 film (no longer made) faster than 35mm, simply because 35mm format has been around a lot longer.
