How to determine Multi-coated filters?

Someone told me the way to tell is by holding the filter underneath a light and see the reflection. If it relects mutiple colors, it's multi coated; if only one color, it's single coated. Is this a correct method?
Also, are all brands have the same quality as long as they are multi-coated?
