In Reply to: digital camcorder filter necessary? posted by Ben on February 23, 2001 at 18:42:04:
: Hi,
: Just bought a miniDV camcorder. The sales person says I should buy the $200 digital filter kit(UV,ND & FLD)specially made for DIGITAL camcorder/camera instead of the "cheap" ordinary filters that I have been using with analog cameras.
: My questions:
: 1.Do they really make any difference?
: 2.Are crystal filters much better than the glass ones?
: Thank you for the help.
1. Yes, filters improve or correct both digital images and conventional film-based images.
2. If you are referring to the brand "Crystal Optics", they are made of glass, not crystal, and are just another filter manufacturer.
The filters you already own should work just fine as long as they are not too large and block any sensors or light metering windows on your camera. I don't know where you are getting the $200 price quote - the Camera Club sells the 28mm version of the filter kit you mention for $39.99

Why would the salesman tell you that?
Profit margin on $2000 Mini-DV camcorder = less than $50
Profit margin on $200 set of three filters = about $175
