: Lens mounts are NOT universal ! All lens mounts today are specifically made for one certain make of camera.
JOHN:UNIVERSAL SCREW MOUNT LENSES (PENTAX/PRAKTICA/M42) ARE A SPECIFIC MOUNT THAT WERE MADE AND ARE STILL BEING MADE, CERTAINLY IN LESS QUANTITY THAN IN THE PAST--BUT THERE ARE MANY AVAILABLE. TODAY THE CAMERAS AND LENSES THAT ARE OF THIS MOUNT OFFER A VERY ECONOMICAL MEANS OF PURSUING PHOTOGRAPHY AND SHOULD NOT BE IGNORED. WHAT IS MORE, MANUFACTURERS SUCH AS TAMRON HAVE MADE THEIR LENSES TO BE USED WITH A T-MOUNT ADAPTER ON A WIDE VARIETY OF CAMERA BODIES--I DON'T THINK THEY WOULD HAVE SURVIVED IF THE T ADAPTERS WERE NOT SUCCESSFUL.
So what is the best make?? Most photographers will reply either Canon or Nikon. My preference is NIKON. You pay a little more but the durability factor is higher than Canon. If you go with Nikon then stick with the Nikon lenses, better quality, better durability and higher resale value.
: The comment about adapting a screw mount to 'any' camera is not totally accurate. Most often when doing this you lose the proper meter coupling and the light meter in your camera will either not work or read incorrectly, so be VERY careful with 'adapting' lenses. Best to stay away from that.
JOHN:YES I SUPPOSE THIS IS TRUE IN SOME CASES, YOU HAVE TO BE AWARE OF YOUR OWN CAMERA'S CAPABILITIES. FROM AN PURELY ECONOMICAL STANDPOINT, IT MAY BE BETTER FOR SOMEONE WHO IS NEW TO PHOTOGRAPHY TO CUT HIS TEETH ON AN OLDER AND CHEAPER MANUAL SLR, TO LEARN THE TRADE. IF IT WORKS OUT, THEN MOVE ON TO THE NIKONS AND CANONS OF THE WORLD, AND THE ADDED EXPENSE THAT THOSE NAMES BRING WITH THEM!! PERSONALLY, I DON'T SEE THE NEED TO, BECAUSE THOSE OLDIES YIELD PHOTOS AS GOOOD AS MODERN NIKONS AND CANONS, BUT THAT IS MY OPINION ONLY. REMEMBER IT IS THE PHOTOGRAPHER, NOT THE CAMERA MOUNT, THAT TAKES THE PICTURE!!
: : Which mount do you guys see as beeing the best for a manual 35mm SLR camera photographer with a desire to produce a wide variety of photo types? : : Thanks,
