This may or may not work properly with your zoom lens, as zoom optics don't alway sfollow the 'standard' rules. With a conventional lens, the extension of the lens should be equal to the focal length for a 1:1 reproduction ratio - 50mm extension for a 50mm lens, etc. A typical 50mm macro lens has 25mm of focusing travel, giving 1:2, and comes with a 25mm extension tube to bring it to 1:1.
You will probably find that your zoom lens on an extension tube does not give you as crisp an image as a true macro lens; use it at a small aperture for best results.
