Canon made several "dedicated" flash units for the T-70. The 277T is one of them, not sure of the others. But just about any hot shoe mounted flash will work OK.
The advantage of a dedicated flash, particularly for a beginner, is your camera will automatically adjust the shutter speed and aperture for you. The downside is there are better flash units made than Canon's own (Sunpak, Vivitar and Metz brands for example), once you start wanting to be more flexible.
