The AE-1 is Canon's biggest seller ever! A good camera with easy to use features. The AE-1 program would be preferred since they 'fixed' a few things with that model. The old AE-1's still bring a good price used and will out last ANY of the newer Canons.
The FG would be my preference. As solid a camera as the AE-1 with a few more features AND you can use the Nikkor lenses (a big plus).
PS - in response to Mike's AE-1 battery door comment. Replacing the battery door on an AE-1 is a BIGGG job. The camera must be disassembled to get to the hinge pin for the door! Expect to pay well over $100 in labor even if you find a door.
