They're both excellent cameras, with a full range of lenses and accessories. The FG has a couple of minor advantages over the AE-1:

1) Full, active manual metering. The Canon AE-1 can be operated manually, but the meter won't follow the situation - you have to set a shutter speed, see what the "auto" setting would recommend, and take the lens off "A" to set the manual f-stop. Works, but takes getting used to...

2) The Nikon bayonet accepts older or newer Nikkor lenses, something the Canon can't do. The Canon FD bayonet is extinct.

But please don't let my Nikon bias influence you unduly - the AE-1 is also a solid, well built camera that enjoys a great reputation. You can't go wrong with either camera, but the Nikon (my opinion only...) has the edge. If you buy the AE-1, make sure the battery compartment door is in good condition, they tend to break easily and no parts are available.

Hope this helps... Mike

Editor's Note: Even though Canon no longer makes FD mount cameras, there are millions of quality used FD mount lenses available made by Canon, Vivitar, Tamron, Tokina, Soligor and other third party lens manufacturers which will fit your Canon AE-1, the A-1, the F-1, the Canon T70, T80 and T90 and several other cameras.
