The Opton lenses were made by Zeiss-West in Oberkochen in the early 1950s, during the period when the ownership of the trademark Carl Zeiss name was in dispute between the Dresden/Jena group in East Germany and the Oberkochen/Stuttgart group in West Germany. The Westerners, having the money, ultimately won out.

I have a 50mm f/1.5 Opton Sonnar that is one of the sharpest lenses I own. I cannot imagine a later Carl Zeiss equivalent being noticeably sharper. There were once rumors to the effect that the Opton lenses were of a somewhat lower level than those marked simply 'Carl Zeiss', but they came from the same place and I don't believe there's any difference in quality.
