If you check any search engine using keywords such as Lomo, camera, Smena, Holga, and toy, you'll find links to low-priced Lomos, old and new.
I'm using the plastic Lomo Smena 35, which I bought new for under $12. The lens is amazing, and the color is fabulous even with cheapo grocery store film. It's fully manual. Wind the film by hand. Set the film speed on the front, dial in the light level using the little cloud icons, guess the distance in meters, and click the shutter lever before taking the photo. It's a little wild, but cool. When the photos come out, they're breathtaking.
This is very different from the Lomo LC-A (aka the Kompact), which is the ~$150 version and a point-and-shoot, which I'm buying for far less directly from Russia. It seems to get mixed reviews, but it's hard to judge from someone else's opinions. Not everyone understands the attraction of the Lomo cameras.
Lomography, as it's called, is a cultish movement which embraces the light leaks and other nuances of using a cheap, plastic camera with a great lens. But that's part of the charm of the Lomo Holga and Smena cameras.
Sure, they're not for everyone. But, for some of us, they're absolutely perfect.
Cheerfully,
Aisling D'Art
