: I NEED AN ILLUMINATED NEGATIVE VIEWING BOARD
: What the heck is this contraption called? I've been searching for hours and cannot zoom in on any products. I have a large box full of pictures mixed with negatives (thanks to my grandson) and I would love to have enlargements made of some of the most beautiful pictures from my 10 yrs in Hawaii. I also need a large magnifying glass.
Hello Margie,
You are looking for a light box or light table and a loupe (not a magnifying glass.) Light boxes are not inexpensive. Neither are quality loupes. The least expensive loupe is made by Agfa and runs about $10 and is entirely plastic. Expensive quality loupes can cost $100 or $200+. To read a discussion of light boxes and loupes, read this page "Evaluating Photographs" on Philip Greenspun's site. (hyperlink is below.)
Since what you describe sounds like a short term endeavor, most photo labs and mini-labs have light boxes or light tables for customer use and some even can provide a loupe. Even my local Walgreen's offers the use of their light box and loupe.
