help with canon ae1 light meter

I have been trying to get to understand how the light
meter on my AE1 operates when in manual mode. Yes,
despite owning an AE1, I do want to control the
aperture setting myself!

I have been used to using a light meter on another
camera that "tends towards centre" when the exposure
is correct e.g. if needle is way above centre line
(over-exposed) then stop down and or decrease shutter
speed until it is close to centre.

I think this type of thing is possible on the AE1, but
I am having trouble getting my head around "the rules".
At the moment it seems that when:
* the lens aperture is not set on 'A' (automatic)
* the film is advanced (ready to shoot), and
* the depth-of-field preview is on
I can make sense of what is going on, but then only
sometimes. It also seems that the scale in the
viewfinder means different things at different times.

Is this operation a feature of the AE1, it being a
shutter-priority auto-exposure model?

I do have a manual but I am finding the relevant
section difficult to understand.

I am using a Canon 50mm lens with the camera, but
I am not sure if it is a FD or a FL mount. I'm
not actually sure what the difference is, or even
how to tell the difference. The manual mentions FD
mounts in various places, in ways which only confuse
me.

I am interested in understanding everything about
this camera and the ways it can be used, so any
information regarding this topic, even when using it
in automatic mode, is appreciated.
