An individual on another site reported having to pay $120 restocking fee to Best Buy for returning a digicam that his wife bought for him, but which wasn't the model he wanted. $120 for setting the box back on the shelf has to rate as one of the biggest rip-offs of all time.

Editor's Note: On the face of it, this does seem unfair, but I worked in the retail trade for several years. Some of the things customers pull on retailers are incredible. Examples include "buying a camera" only to return it the following day after having shot someone's wedding the previous afternoon (pictures of which were turned into the store's one hour lab before the customer made his way to the returns counter.) Other examples I've seen include shoppers outfitting a family of four with camping gear, a tent, sleeping bags, propane stove, cookware, fishing poles, etc., - taking a one or two week vacation, then return everything as unsatisfactory and demand their money back. Or the person who came to the paint department, selected the shade of paint they wanted, had the clerk tint five gallons to their chosen color, only to immediately announce they weren't going to pay for the paint because they didn't like the shade after seeing it mixed up.
Restocking fees are generally used for merchandise which has been used. A store can no longer sell a camera or camcorder as brand new if it looks like it has been opened and used, or if the packing and the container are torn open. Having purchased marked down electronic equipment and a color television from Best Buy, I know when someone returns a product which is less than perfectly new, Best Buy will mark it down and sell it for less money.
