I'm not sure which lens you have, but if it a short zoom, say 28-80 or similar but with an f stop range of say 3.5 at 28 and 5.6 at 80, you'll find that when you shoot in one of the program modes or even manual, or aperture priority, and your f stop is set at a low number (large aperture) it will change to a higher number (small aperture)as you zoom in. Reason being that the longer the focal length becomes, the smaller the aperture becomes and the camera compensates accordingly to adjust to the correct exposure.
I use a N70 even at weddings with very good results, and I use some Sigma lenses. I don't believe there is a problem with your lens. Nikon is better lens wise, but not to such a huge extent.
