The retailer that is saying tamron is better is Canon Lenses
is full of crap. canons are superor to tamrons. If you can afford
the canon, by all means buy it. the lens manufacturer of the
camera you own, (i.e. Canon) will always be better than third
party lenses. the only reason they make third partty lenses is
for people who cant afford the one from there camera
manufacturer. (especially with big glass). Canon lenses have
great quality, USM Motors, and image stabilization. By the way, i
saw that you were planning on buying a rebel 2000, so I'm
assuming your an amateur. I think you should really look at the
nikon N60 instead. It costs a little less, and is a lot sturdier.
It doesnt have as many bells and whistles as the canon, but its
built much better, and nikon has more accessories and better
lenses.
good luck,
Jim
