: it seems that randomly when i try to take a photograph with my pentax k1000 slr camera that the mirror stays up, rendering the viewfinder completely useless for a few frames of film. is there any way i can repair this myself? i can't afford to have a professional repair it. this only happens once in a while, and i don't know what is causing it. any help would be greatly appreciated ;)
I'm only making a guess at a possible explanation. If you have an older Pentax K1000, one that was made 15-20 years ago, it is possible that black baffle foam designed to cushion the mirror when it flips up is turning gooey and the mirror is sticking to it. If this is the case, the foam needs to be replaced and while some amateur camera repair enthusiasts are able to do this themselves, I don't recommend it because you could end up damaging the mirror (which is very delicate and top-silvered) or end up with pieces of the disintegrating foam ending up in other camera parts. Best left up to a camera repair tech.
